Welcome to the Hernando County Green Party Website-

This year we are working on promotion of renewable energy and we have legally intervened in the new Levy County nuclear power plant construction. Please visit our Clean Energy page for information on alternative energy sources. We are also getting information out on current issues such as single payer healthcare and better budgeting and job creation in this country. We support the Hometown Democracy, medical marijuana and the redistricting ammendments. Please sign them if you have not yet. Also, please visit our favorite links page for the latest additions. Thanks for visiting our website!

Hernando Green Party Meetings-

We meet on the 15th of every month from 7:00-8:00 PM at Saturn Studio 314 E. Liberty Street, Brooksville

E-mail greencat9@juno.com for the agenda.

Green Screens-

As long as the county's budget shortfall forces the public library to roll back their hours, we are unable to show our evening features there. Screenings at Saturn Studio will be announced and we may take some to various locations in the area when we have speaking engagements. Keep your eye on the St Petersburg Times for our future events. If you would like to be added to our listserv, please send an e-mail to greencat9@juno.com

We have a question for our "free market" supporting Republican county commissioners in Brooksville. Why would you even consider penalizing the library, by taking away their fair share of the budget, just because they have been astute enough to secure other funding? If the library has been able to get themselves a GRANT for $4 million dollars, they should be able to KEEP that and not surrender their funding to the county organizations that were not working as smart!

This sounds rather like you are having a double standard for them over other county businesses. The other county departments need to get going and pull themselves up by their boots straps to find THEIR extra money (if needed) now that taxes are lowered. They also need to do it the ethical way, not by using some advantage they may have to invest in a stock they may have a way to influence. (I'm thinking of the insider trading "skinny" on Ginny, our 5th district congressperson in D.C.)

Green Screens at Cafe Hey

Starting at 7:00 PM we will start with a short film "The Story of Stuff". Then at 7:20 PM we'll view the award winning film "Crude: The Real Price of Oil". Brought to you by The Green Party of Florida. Cafe Hey will have the usual great selection of refreshments available.

When you see it, we think that you will agree that "The Story of Stuff" is a short film that can have more of an impact than you'd expect it to. It tells some simple concepts, but it is a great lead in to the feature film.

CRUDE, the feature film, has been named one of the TOP 5 documentaries of 2009. It tells the epic tail of one of the largest and most controversial legal cases on the planet: the infamous $27 billion "Amazon Chernobyl" lawsuit pitting 30,000 rainforest dwellers against the U.S. oil giant Chevron.

Winner of 19 international awards, CRUDE takes you inside a riveting high stakes drama steeped in global politics, the environmental movement, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, multinational corporate power and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. You will feel the impact of this film, as it opens our eyes to the sinister inhumanity that multi national corporate operate under. CRUDE's story is told in an interesting way, with an upbeat ending giving the viewers understanding & direction.

Rave reviews from Rolling Stone, The New York times, LA Weekly, Howard Zinn and more! You may have heard this in the news recently...THIS IS THE FILM CHEVRON RECENTLY SUED THE FILM MAKER IN ORDER TO GET ALL OF THE UNUSED EXTRA FOOTAGE AND OUT TAKES FROM THE FILM!
Running time is: 104 minutes.

What are we to think of the operations of multi-national petroleum companies? Who should pay the damages? If corporations now have the rights of people (based on the SCOTUS ruling by the Supreme Court this past January) how are they to be held accountable? Can this film apply to our very own BP/Haliburton/Transocean Gulf disaster that threatens to turn our beautiful gulf area into a ravaged & toxic space that is so often reserved for the "third world"? What is YOUR opinion of the often used corporate MO of externalizing the costs and internalizing all of the profits? What should we be expecting of our national leaders in future energy policies? We'd like your thoughts after...

Cafe Hey is located at 1540 N. Franklin Street, Tampa.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The more that you see the elitist class take for themselves from we the people,
you will know that our ranks grow. There WILL BE a movement and a confrontation.
The more that the powers that be align away from the people, instead of compromising
fairly, the more violent the confrontation will be. It doesn’t have to be that way
--------------if we stop hiding from the truth.
The Green’s seed was planted and started to grow in 2000. It’s there. Despite the
weed whackers that try to cut us down with voting tricks, down talk, corporate media
shut out and whatever else they can use against us----The Greens are there.
You may only see and hear about the activists, but more and more people are registering
their values and registering Green! The more that you see the elitist class take
for themselves from we the people you will know that our ranks grow.

10 EASY GREEN PARTY SUGGESTIONS

FOR EARTH DAY AND EVERY DAY!

1. Only buy and use compact fluorescent or LED bulbs. When you leave a room, turn off the lights. Be sure to dispose of fluorescent bulbs properly.
2. Bike to the stores once a week (at least).*see below for more explanation*
3. Rethink buying a new car.*see below for more explanation*
4. Start using a clothesline and use cold water only in your washing machine.*
5. Use cloth shopping bags.*see below
6. Look up www.getoffthegrid.com on the web and consider ways that YOU can get off the grid.
7. Always recycle plastic, aluminum cans, glass, newspaper, magazines, plastic bags, and cardboard.*see below
8. Just park it.*see below
9. Keep a jug near your household sinks. When you run the water waiting to get it warm or hot, use the jug to capture it for plant watering rather than let water go down the drain.
10. Xeriscape your yard with attractive Florida Friendly plants.*

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*2. If you don't ride a bike shop with a neighbor or FOR a neighbor that can't getout. Make that trip count!

*3. Unless you are buying a fuel efficient car with SIGNIFICANTLY better mileage or getting rid of a huge SUV (that would be better put to use as a solution to the homeless problem) you could just be adding to landfill by dumping your old vehicle. Tremendous energy is used to produce vehicles and, of course, expensive metals that are becoming scarce are used as well. Find a good mechanic and repair your car. This will help your local economy. By investing in your vehicle you will learn and fix the problems that occurs rather than getting, potentially, a new set of problems from a used vehicle or big monthly payments for a new one. This may go against the grain of auto industry ads, but so what? They can't stop you from doing the right thing, can they?

4. Only use your clothes dryer for emergencies or rainy days. You'd be surprised to find out how fast your clothes dry in the breezy sunshine. No more static cling while you save by not buying any April Fresh chemicals ----the fresh scent is free! Also, using hot or warm water in your washer uses more energy (overall) than the dryer! Think of how little energy you will use if you use cold water and then hang your clothes out on the line!! Most detergents work fine in cold water.

5. Throw cloth shopping bags into your car & grab them before you go into the store. You'd be amazed at what 2 cloth bags can hold (about the equivalent of 10 plastic bags) if packed right. Revive the lost art of smart grocery packing. Put cans, boxes, bottle, cheeses, and frozen items in bottom. Then fruit and veggies next. Crushables on top. Easy!

7. Once you really start to sort plastics and cardboard you'll see how little actual trash you have left. If you have recycling pick up, use it, or take it to the Winn Dixie parking lot on U.S. 19. While you are there, check out the independent businesses at the nearby Outlet Mall across US 19. There are other places that may be closer to you, learn where and combine your trips. Rather than toss food scraps into the energy using garbage disposal, find a spot to make a mini compost heap and use this on your garden or as mulch under a hedge.

8. When you do your shopping outings, park at the farthest end but fairly parallel to the door you want to enter. You'll save time (and gas) by not circling to find the closest spot. You'll get exercise by walking to and from, as well as less dings on your vehicle from car doors and carts.

10. "Lawns can be a yawn" meaning that too much lawn, especially in front, is boring and seldom used for anything. Not to mention all the watering and chemicals needed to keep it green when, even then, you can still get brown spots. Consider starting with a section and putting in maintenance free plants or maybe try edible landscaping.

Why do “they” want to keep the Green Party quiet?

Because we say: Make them pay!

Aren’t you getting tired of subsidizing large multi-national corporations like oil and big pharma?

Aren’t you getting tired of cleaning up the mistakes and disasters of the investment banks, insurance companies & power companies? Not to mention the crazed war policies of the Bush/Obama administrations (including the continued poor treatment of our veterans)?

It’s about huge factory farms and the chemical industry being in denial about things like genetically modified seeds that produce plants without seeds. Which WOULD be very dangerous to our future food supply.

All the squandering, environmental damage and any sort of loss is passed on to U.S. taxpayers.

But THEY always get to keep their profits!

It’s about responsibility.

It is things like mercenary soldiers that do not have to answer to anyone. To them it’s “good business” for them to have disruption of all types going on all over the world. It’s TIME to shop American products and to INSIST on REAL fair trade when we need trade.

Yes. It IS “our time.”

Show “them” that you are REALLY ready for a CHANGE in our national politics.
